GIRLS DON’T PLAY GUITAR
Self-directed short-form graphic novella developed for my Fall 2025 Media Arts Degree Project.
GIRLS DON’T PLAY GUITAR is a short-form graphic novella depicting the story of the Liverbirds, the real-life all-girl rock band formed in 1960s Liverpool in the wake of Beatlemania. The work takes inspiration from DIY music zines and other music-focused graphic novels, telling the story of the band from its inception to its premature end and highlighting the many societal factors poised against the girls and the impact of their gender on their careers. The illustrations are drawn digitally using Procreate and InDesign, and the novella exists primarily as a printed zine, with a digital version available for ease of distribution.
